AARP alerts seniors to these five little-known discount opportunities:

Although there is a running debate regarding what constitutes senior citizenship, AARP begins sending out marketing materials the minute an individual hits that half-century mark. With life expectancy in America at 78.6 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, why not enjoy aging’s main perk: discounts!

While many restaurants, grocers and service organizations publicize senior discount promotions, many do not. To learn of discounts, first ask. Find out at what age discounts start, as some begin as young as age 50, and exactly what is offered and when.

AARP alerts seniors to these five little-known discount opportunities:
1) A free SilverSneakers membership provides access to more than 13,000 participating fitness facilities around the country as well as special classes and activities; this depends on one’s health care plan and what the gym offers. AARP asserts: “It doesn’t hurt to ask.”

2) Utilities: Ask your gas, electric, cable, internet and phone providers.

3) National chain auto services (ask local mechanic shops as well).

4) Movie tickets. AARP shares: “Seniors 60-plus can save up to 30 percent on regular admission at most AMC Theatres and up to 60 percent on Tuesday Senior Days offered at select locations. Showcase Cinemas offers a discounted $6 admission for the 60-plus crowd on Senior Wednesdays. Senior day discounts at Cinemark theaters vary by location.”

5) For $20 annually or $80 lifetime, those 62 and older can purchase passes to federal and national recreational sites.

Food is the big focal category for senior discounts. Most chains and some local spots provide discounts with an AARP card, but other restaurants advertise special discount days for all seniors. And many grocers cater to seniors at least one day weekly with some kind of overall discount.

By joining AARP, for under $20 per year, many more discounts are available. Plus, apps like Senior Discounts & Coupons and Sciddy make it easy to learn which establishments cater to the 60-plus crowd.
