The boys lacrosse state tournament is right around the corner and teams throughout the state are jockeying for the 16 playoff spots.
With a handful of games the schedule, the Milford Buccaneers look to make a late season run to secure a postseason berth. Like many teams, they have gone through ups and downs.
Milford opened the year winning three of the first four games, including big Henlopen South wins over Delmar and Lake Forest. After the 3-1 start, the Bucs dropped two in a row to Dover and Indian River.
After a tough one-goal loss to IR, the Bucs took five of the next six games, winning over Woodbridge, Sussex Academy, Lake Forest, Woodbridge and Delmar. The loss came by just a goal, 19-18, to a very tough Caravel Academy squad.
So far, Milford has proven capable of overcoming the bumps in the road.
“It’s very important to be able to put what has happened behind you and move forward,” said head coach Blake Faulkner. “Picking up those wins is big but we still have too much season left to get complacent.
“We still know we let games slip away,” he said. “We’re going to do our best to assure that doesn’t happen the rest of the way.”
On Wednesday, they’ll host Indian River, looking to avenge a 9-8 loss last month. Friday, Milford will take on Polytech in their final road game. The Bucs will finish things out May 13, hosting Sussex Tech in a season finale where they will honor this year’s seniors.
