With just two meets and one invitational left until the Kent County championships, the Milford Buccaneers look to end the cross country season on a good note.

Throughout the year, Milford has been led by a young core of runners on both the boys and girls teams. A large group of freshman runners have the Lady Buccaneers off to a 3-4 team record, while sophomores and freshmen have shown flashes of potential on the boys team, despite a 1-6 mark.

The Lady Bucs have fought through a tough schedule, with several freshman girls emerging as time leaders. Four freshmen have at least two top 20 finishes: Kassidy Willey, Hailey Thompson, Paige Thompson and Alexandria Herber.

Herber has a first place finish along with a third and sixth place, while adding 18th place in the 46th annual Tidewater High Fall Classic.

Willey has three top-20 finishes, including a sixth to go along with finishing 38th in the Tidewater Classic.

The Thompson sisters each have a top-five finish, adding to four top-20 finishes in total. Paige Thompson finished 44th in the Tidewater Classic, with Hailey Thompson two spots back at 46th.

Meanwhile, fellow freshmen Sophia Sobota and Charlie Zammetti, along with sophomore Emily Zammetti, have also contributed.

After beginning the season being swept by Caesar Rodney and Smyrna, the Lady Bucs returned the favor against Delmar and Sussex Central before dropping two of three, falling to Cape Henlopen and Sussex Tech while knocking off Polytech in a quad-meet.

On the boys side, it’s been rough going, but plenty to be optimistic about in the team’s future. Much like the Lady Bucs, the boys team has underclassmen who’ve stood out.

Sophomore Dale Ostermann has led the way with three top-20 finishes, including a season-high10th place.

Meanwhile junior Moses Martinez and sophomore Gregory Auguste have shown improving ability throughout the year. Martinez has two top-20 finishes, including a seventh-place finish and placing 39th in the Tidewater Classic. Auguste has two top-20 finishes, with his season high a 12 th place. Auguste finished 44th at the Tidewater Classic.

Sophomore James Stangl and freshman Angelo Constantino have also contributed, each earning one top-20 finish.

Milford will host their final home meet at Milford Millponds Nature Preserve against Indian River
and Lake Forest on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 4 p.m.
