Sen. Chris Coons, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released a statement after the Sept. 27 hearing with Judge Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford.
“Today’s hearing was a difficult day for Dr. Ford, for Judge Kavanaugh, for the Senate Judiciary Committee and for the country,” said Coons.
“Today’s hearing was not what Dr. Ford, Judge Kavanaugh, or the American people deserved. These serious allegations against Judge Kavanaugh should have been investigated by the FBI promptly and thoroughly, today’s testimony should have included experts on sexual assault, and additional witnesses — including Mark Judge — should have testified under oath,” said Coons.
“Dr. Ford provided compelling testimony today, and all of us were reminded this morning that she came forward with nothing to gain and quite a bit to lose. I’m grateful Dr. Ford had a chance to be heard today, as I believe that 27 years after the hearings into Prof. Anita Hill’s allegations, we must show that at the highest levels of power women are respected when they bring forward allegations of sexual assault,” said Coons.
“I believe before the Judiciary Committee moves to a final vote, we should pause for a week to seek further investigation and insight into the allegations against Judge Kavanaugh,” said Coons.
