16-year-old driver cited for failure to remain stopped
Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash that occurred Sunday evening on Route 1 (Bay Road) in Milford.
The preliminary investigation has determined the incident occurred on Sunday, July 15, at around 5:30 p.m., on Bay Road in the area of New Wharf Road. A 2001 Volkswagen Beetle, being operated by a 16-year-old Bridgeville female, was on New Wharf Road attempting to turn right onto northbound Bay Road. The Volkswagen turned onto Bay Road and crossed over both northbound lanes, into the path of a 2008 Honda Pilot in the left lane.
The Volkswagen collided with the Honda, which was operated by a 72-year-old Newark female. The Pilot was redirected across the grass median of Bay Road, into the southbound lanes, where it struck the side of a 2016 Volvo tractor-trailer, being operated by a 62-year-old Seaford man. The rear axle of the trailer became dislodged.
The Volkswagen driver and her passenger were transported to Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. The 16-year-old driver was cited for failure to remain stopped and failure to have insurance identification in possession.
The 72-year- old driver of the Honda was transported by Delaware State Police Aviation to Christiana Hospital with serious injuries. One juvenile passenger in the vehicle with serious injuries was flown to the A.I. DuPont Hospital. Two other passengers in the Honda Pilot, one adult and one juvenile, were transported by EMS to Bayhealth Milford Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the collision.
The roadway in the area of the crash was closed for approximately five hours while the investigation was conducted and the road was cleared.
