Hundreds of gallons of peracetic acid were spilled at Mountaire Farms' Selbyville facility on Thursday.
On Thursday, July 12, around 11:45 a.m., according to the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, about 318 gallons of the corrosive substance was spilled onto the ground from a "tote." Peracetic acid is considered hazardous by the EPA.
"Four employees in the parking area of our Selbyville facility came in contact with a substance that assists in microbial intervention – a process used to create a bacteria free environment during production," said a statement released by Mountaire.
The incident is under investigation by DNREC. According to Mountaire, the involved employees have all been treated and released from the hospital.
