Airlifted to Christiana

Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash involving a motorcycle Saturday.

Just before noon June 16, a 2016 GMC Canyon pickup, pulling a loaded boat trailer, was northbound on Oak Orchard Road (Route 5), approaching the entrance to the Oak Orchard Diner. A 1988 Harley Davidson motorcycle, was directly behind it.

The operator of the truck began to turn right into the entrance of the diner. At the same time, the motorcycle began to pass the truck and its trailer on the right. The motorcycle struck the truck and the operator was ejected.

The operator of the pickup, a 63-year-old man from Wilmington, and his passenger were properly restrained and both were uninjured. Impairment does not appear to be a factor on behalf of the driver.

The operator of the motorcycle, a 58-year-old man from Lewes, was not wearing a helmet. He was transported by the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit to Christiana Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition. Impairment is unknown at this time.

The crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
