No charges have been filed

A bicyclist has died of complications from injuries he suffered after being hit by a car in Ocean View on Saturday, May 26.

Around 10 a.m., 26-year-old Alfred L. Yergey III, of Ocean View, was riding his bike in the eastbound bike lane of Atlantic Avenue (Route 26), approaching Central Avenue, as a 2018 Subaru Forester being operated by 65-year-old Jodi Silverman Bartow, of Bethesda, Maryland, was stopped in the left turn lane of westbound Atlantic Avenue,  waiting to turn into a parking lot.

Traffic was heavy due to the holiday weekend, and eastbound vehicle traffic was stop-and-go on the busy Route 26. A pickup truck in the eastbound lane of Atlantic Avenue stopped to let Bartow make the left turn into the parking lot, but she failed to yield the right-of-way to Yergey and struck him.

Yergey was flown by Delaware State Police helicopter to Christiana Hospital. Although he was wearing a helmet, he suffered life-threatening injuries and died the next day, May 27. No one else was injured in the incident.

Alcohol and/or unsafe speed are not factors on behalf of Bartow or Yergey. At this time, Ocean View Police are still investigating the collision and no charges have been filed.

As a result of the collision, Atlantic Avenue from Old School Lane to Woodland Avenue was shut down for approximately three hours.
