Appoquinimink schools and offices experienced a lockdown at approximately 2:45 p.m. The lockdown of the schools and offices was reportedly due to an armed intruder roaming the area.

“After school and evening activities have been canceled,” said Appoquinimink Public Information Officer Lilian Miles. Miles went on to say that the Board Workshop would be the one thing that was not canceled.

At approximately 3:00 p.m., the lockdown was lifted, according to Miles.

“Buses will be deploying to secondary schools first,” Miles said. “Then they will return for their elementary school runs.”

Police say that the lockdown was related to the incident where an armed suspect shot a state trooper outside of a Newark area convenience store.

The suspect has since fired shots in the 500 block of St. Michaels Drive, Brick Mill Farm Development. Police say that the suspect has refused orders to surrender, and has continued to fire at police officers.

Due to the situation, Brick Mill Road has been closed between Marl Pit Road and Middletown Odessa Road (SR299).
