Mispillion River Brewing will dish up its second Meatball-Con at the brewery on Saturday.

Nearly a dozen restaurants will duke it out with their best meatball creations at the free event. Guests will have the opportunity to sample the delectable eats and sip cold drinks, while enjoying live music.

Donations will be collected for the Food Bank of Delaware's Milford branch.

What's Meatball-Con?

“It is a celebration of all forms of balled-up meat,” said Lauren Bigelow, marketing ninja for the brewery.

Restaurants will choose between three different categories of meatballs to prepare: Traditional Meatballs are any meatball that is Italian or Swedish in origin; Balls to the Wall is any meat in savory form; and Sweet Balls are dessert meatballs.

“The only rule is that it has to contain meat and be in a spherical shape,” Bigelow said.

Abbott's Grill won last year's competition.

How it started

Like most good things, Meatball-Con was born from a goofy idea.

“It started as a joke,” Bigelow said. “We were all at work one day debating who made the best meatballs and realized the only way to know for sure was to start a competition.”

Although the event has occurred only once before, it's become a fast favorite among the Mispillion River Brewing crew.

“It is the event our employees look forward to most,” Bigelow said.

Giving back

In addition to providing folks with a good time, Meatball-Con is also purposed to give back to the community. That's why donations will be collected for the Food Bank of Delaware.

“The Food Bank is located just down the road from us,” Bigelow said. "Three to four times a year all of the staff members of the brewery volunteer at the Food Bank.

"But we understand that sometimes they need money in addition to our time. With an event that is so focused on food like Meatball-Con is, I can't imagine not using that platform to raise food for those who go without.”
