David M. Surette and Arturo Rosa, both from Dover, were arrested by the Harrington Police Department and the Delaware State Police early Friday morning for their roles in robberies that took place in Dover and Harrington, said Lt. Earl K. Brode, spokesman for the Harrington police.
Both Surette and Rosa are charged with first-degree robbery and related charges following separate incidents that took place at a Shore Stop, located at 3668 North Dupont Highway in Dover, and Valero, in the 17000 block of South Dupont Highway in Harrington.
Harrington officers were alerted for an armed robbery that occurred at Valero at 1:35 Friday morning. Police were told an unknown person entered the store, displayed a handgun and demanded money and fled.
Officers searched the area and saw a subject running on Peck Avenue near the intersection of Dickerson Street, near where the robbery took place. The subject was wearing the same clothing that the suspect was described as wearing during the robbery, police said.
Surette, a 25-year-old of the 500 block of Crawford Avenue in Dover, was then taken into custody. Police said that while searching him they found the stolen money from the robbery and also recovered a BB gun.
Earlier in the evening, the Delaware State Police responded to a report of an armed robbery that took place at a Shore Stop on Route 13 north of Dover.
The Delaware State Police and Harrington police began a joint investigation to see if the robberies were linked.
An investigation revealed that during the Dover robbery, a suspect entered the store and displayed a handgun and demanded money before fleeing in a silver Chevrolet Monte Carlo. State police were able to get a description of the suspect.
While a Harrington officer and State Police detective were at the Harrington Police Department, a silver Monte Carlo pulled into the parking lot of the police station.
Rosa, a 25-year-old of the first block of Mitscher Road in Dover, was driving the vehicle. He was wearing the same clothes as the Dover robbery suspect earlier in the evening.
Police determined that Surette and Rosa were both the same suspects involved in the Harrington and Dover robberies. Rosa was then taken into custody.
Police executed a search warrant on Rosa’s car and found items linking them to the robberies.
Surette and Rosa are both charged by Harrington police with first-degree robbery, wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony and second-degree conspiracy. Both were given a $28,500 secured bond.
Both suspects also were charged by the Delaware State Police with robbery and related charges for the robbery in Dover. Surette and Rosa were committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown in default of bond.
