Coming off huge wins against Dover and Smyrna, the Milford High School varsity basketball team showed no signs of letting up against the Laurel Bulldogs. The Bucs scored their highest point total of the season on Tuesday night, crushing the Bulldogs 96-64 to bring their Henlopen North-leading record up to 6-1.
Junior guard DJ Cephas had a career day, leading the team in scoring with 23 points. Cephas had a number of exceptional plays on both sides of the court, including a brilliant move where he followed his own basket by stealing the ball after the Bulldogs' inbound pass, right under the basket, and making another lay-up with two Laurel defenders between him and the hoop.
The Bucs led for nearly the full length of the game, but it was still a close match early on. The Bulldogs trailed by just two points at the end of the first quarter, but that was the last time they got that close. Milford poured on the offense for the next three quarters, never letting up even when Head Coach BJ Joseph pulled most of the starters in the fourth. The Bucs still outscored Laurel 27-15 in the final period, and would have easily broken 100 points without the mercy rule causing the clock to run continuously for the last four minutes of play.
Three other Bucs scored in double digits - Shane Letthand, with 15 points, Marques Jones, with 17, and Richard McLendon, with 10. Chris Long had nine points, Alvino Hazzard had eight and Colby Shorts had six.
The Bucs travel to Indian River on Friday.
