The Bucs’ season ended with a whimper.

In the first round of the state championship tournament, the offensive power of the Milford High School baseball team, which carried them through many tough games in this year’s 15-5 campaign, was nowhere to be found, as they lost 12-0 to Sussex Central.

“It was a whupping,” Head Coach John Nichols said. “That’s all it was.”

The Bucs got just three hits in five innings – Morgan Luff led off the second inning with a single and doubled in the fourth, and A.J. Tillmes had a leadoff single in the fifth. Along with Nick Holland, who drew a second-inning walk, and Jerell Allen, who was hit by a pitch in the first, those were Milford’s only baserunners.

“I thought for sure we’d hit the ball a few times against them,” Nichols said. “That’s why they’re the second-ranked team in the state.”

The Golden Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and kept adding to it, scoring in every inning of play. The game was called under the mercy rule when the Bucs went into the bottom of the fifth down 12-0.

Nichols said he expects the defending Henlopen South champions to return ready for a deeper run in 2010. Of the 21 players on the Milford roster, 17 are underclassmen and will be eligible to play again next year.
