Through five weeks of boys lacrosse, the Milford Buccaneers are among the top teams in the state.
The Bucs have suffered just one loss in eight games, sitting alongside Caesar Rodney, Caravel Academy, Delaware Military Academy, Salesianum and St. Andrew’s as one of the state’s best.
With six to go, four on the road, the next is today against Woodbridge.
This time last year, Milford had a nearly identical record but struggled, going backwards heading into the playoffs. After starting 8-1, the Bucs dropped five of their final six regular season games, then losing to Caesar Rodney in the Henlopen Conference championship, and ending in a first round playoff defeat by the Riders.
Part of the success so far has been their domination of the Henlopen Conference. So far, they’ve earned victories over Lake Forest, Woodbridge, Delmar, Indian River and Sussex Academy.
After the eight games, the Buccaneers averaged nearly 13 goals per game. Only Appoquinimink, Wilmington Friends, Archmere Academy and still undefeated Caesar Rodney have averaged more.
On defense, the Bucs have been strong. With an average eight goals against per game, they’ve kept Sussex Academy, Newark, Woodbridge and Indian River at or below that and have allowed double digit scores against just twice, versus Lake Forest and DMA.
Over their final six games of the season, the Bucs will face the likes of Sussex Tech, along with their second contests with Lake Forest, Polytech, Indian River and Delmar.
Only Lake Forest currently has a winning record among the remaining opponents, but those
teams would love to play spoiler and dash Milford’s postseason hopes.
