Letter to the editor about the state's liquor taxes
Levy Court’s request to downsize its government is logical and reasoned. Sussex County and New Castle County eliminated the position of Receiver of Taxes and Comptroller in the late 60s and early 70s. Professional studies paid for by Levy Court have identified these positions as redundant and unnecessary. No individuals will lose their jobs and departments will not suffer a loss in services.
Many of the members of the 261st Signal Battalion, currently stationed in Iraq, live in the Milford area and other central Delaware cities and towns. The Milford Lions Club will be shipping comfort items, that are often difficult to get in Iraq, to the 261st around the middle of July. The Lions Club’s Civic Improvement Committee is spearheading this effort and will supply a cash donation for the project. We are requesting community support in the form of cash donations and/or materials to be shipped.
During the 2010 Kent County Levy Court budget hearings, I identified systemic economic flaws in how our government operates. I stated that if Kent County was a business, it could not ignore these flaws because they would directly impact our long-term bottom line. To demonstrate the seriousness of my concerns, I asked the finance director to give me a pay cut for 2009 and 2010. Simply put, if our government was a business and I was the CEO, I could not expect to make the same salary this year as I did last year.
