Miss Dorothy E. Markert, of Newark, died on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at her home. She was 93.

Born in Harrington on Sept. 15, 1915, Miss Markert was the daughter of the late Leander G. Markert and Signe M. Swanson Markert.

She was a graduate of the University of Delaware and later received her Master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She also proudly served her country as a Women’s Army Corps in the European Theater during World War II. A gifted mathematics teacher, Miss Markert was employed for 34 years at Newark High School, where she was also the school’s first guidance counselor. She retired from education in 1972. Among her professional affiliations, she was a member of the International Teachers Society and Life Member of both the National Education Association and the Delaware Education Association. Active in her community, Miss Markert was a member of the American Legion and the Newark Senior Center.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Lee George Markert, and sisters, Irene Markert and Florence M. Gibson.

She is survived by her niece, Doris G. Kimmel of Milford, grand nieces and grand nephew, Kathryn Russ of Newport, Rhode Island, Karen McColley of Milford and Dan Kimmel of Lincoln.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 4, 2009 at Milford Community Cemetery on North Walnut Street, Milford. Rev. John Gilmore will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in the memory of Miss Markert may be made to the American Cancer Society, 92 Read’s Way, Ste. 205, New Castle, DE 19720 or a charity of the donor’s choice.
