The Greater Boys & Girls Club, Inc. gymnasium was humming with activity July 6 as the club unveiled its unusual version of an Adirondack chair. The chair is one of 10 in the area that will be competing to win a wacky chair contest sponsored by the Ellen DeGeneres show, Delaware State Fair and other groups.
Under the direction of artist Mary Ann Quinn, children submitted their ideas for a real crazy chair and she put them together for the unveiled design.
“The children came up with a lot of food ideas,” Quinn said.
Painted scenes of the fair, a motorized Ferris wheel, a pop-up clown and a carousel horse round out the artistic aspects of the still-functional chair. Quinn said she plans to have a “Where’s Ellen” theme in the fair paintings with Ellen appearing at various painted venues. A Who’s Who list of Boys & Girls Club alumni will include J. Lo, Brad Pitt, Bill Cosby, Shaquille O’Neal and others.
Eighth-grader Deja Neal said she worked with a group of students to come up with the Ferris Wheel idea.
“We wanted to show something about the fair,” she said.
And that makes sense, since the fair will be the biggest showcase for the chair locally. After a brief tour of the county where area notables will be photographed sitting in the chair, it will be on display at the fair with the other entries from July 23 to Aug. 1.
Voting, however, will begin Saturday, July 11, and run to Aug. 28. Anyone can vote by going online at www.wmdt.com and entering. The first vote is free and automatically includes entry in a drawing for airfare, hotel and tickets for two to the Ellen show in Los Angeles. People can vote as many times as they wish but each additional vote is $1 each.
