Lawrence Hayden has been released on a secured bond.
A former NASCAR Xfinity Series race team member has been charged with assault in Dover after allegedly breaking the jaw of team owner Jerry Hataway.
Lawrence Hayden, 33, of Concord, N.C., allegedly hit Hataway, 56, over an argument regarding Hayden’s employment with the team, Dover Police Department spokesman Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman said in a press release.
The incident took place at 10:51 a.m. Friday, May 4 at the infield of the Dover International Speedway, Hoffman said.
The episode began as a verbal disagreement that turned into a physical one, with Hayden starting to punch the team owner.
Hataway was treated on site and then moved to Bayhealth Hospital Kent Campus for further treatment.
Dover police took Hayden into custody without further incident, Hoffman said.
Hayden is charged with a single count of second-degree assault, and then released on a $500 secured bond.
