Films at the Schwartz Center for the Arts continue with “Broken Embraces” at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 14.
Penelope Cruz stars as Magdalena, an aspiring actress who becomes the center of a love triangle between a successful screenwriter and a jealous movie producer. The blind screenwriter narrates the story of how the jealous producer tried to keep Magdalena all for himself. The tense, soap opera-like love triangle is counterbalanced with the crazy, comedic film that entangles them all so passionately.
“Broken Embraces” is in Spanish with English subtitles, and runs 2:07. It is rated R for sexual content, language and some drug material.
Next up will be “Me and Orson Welles” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 17,
and Sunday, March 21.
Not too many people can deny the genius of Orson Welles and not too many people did deny the ego of him as well. Viewers get to see that genius and ego brought to life in a film praised as “energetic and engaging” and containing an utterly convincing performance by Christian McKay as Orson Welles. Zac Efron stars as Richard, a teenage actor who impresses enough to get cast in “Julius Caesar,” a modern retelling of the Shakespearian play, directed by Welles in 1937. The film follows the passions and tensions leading up to the play’s opening night. Also starring Claire Danes, “Me and Orson Welles” runs 1:54, and is rated PG-13 for sexual references and smoking.
