Scholarship pageants seek contestants

The 2009 Miss Sussex County & Miss Georgetown Scholarship Organization is currently seeking contestants for its upcoming program in November. This pageant is an official preliminary to the Miss Delaware Organization. 

The new Miss Sussex County and Miss Georgetown 2009 will have an opportunity to represent Sussex County and Georgetown at the Miss Delaware Pageant in June 2009. The new titleholders will also be able to travel and make appearances through out the year. 

This scholarship pageant is open to young women between the ages of 17 and 24 years old, who must either work, live or attend school in Sussex County (Miss Sussex County title) or Delaware (Miss Georgetown title). Seventeen year olds must be a high school senior. Scholarships will be awarded to the new titleholders and various cash awards will be presented. 

The program will take place on Saturday, Nov. 22, at Georgetown Middle School. The Deadline for applications is Nov. 9.

First State Harmonettes needs singers

The First State Harmonettes, a Sweet Adelines International women’s barbershop harmony group, has instituted an exciting new “Visiting Singers Program.”

The chorus is inviting women and girls, age 12 or older, to visit them during November and December to sing Christmas music in and around the Milford area. There will be no membership fee for visiting singers during that time. 

The chorus rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 6:45 to 9 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church on Walnut Street in Milford.

Cedarfield Ruritan Club Turkey Shoots

The Cedarfield Ruritan Club has announced its dates for the turkey shoots of the 2008-2009 season. The dates will be: Nov. 9 and 23; Dec. 7; Jan. 4 and 18; Feb. 1 and 18; March 1, 15 and 29; and April 12. The rain dates will be on the following Sundays. The gate will open at 9 a.m. and the shoot will start at 10 a.m. Breakfast sandwiches will be available. The clubhouse is located on Tub Mill Pond Road, Milford.

Milford New Century Club announce meeting

Co-president of the Milford New Century Club, Ann Burton, and Joan Higgins, announced that the 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3 meeting would have Dr. Gary Wray, as the afternoon speaker.

Wray is the Founder of the Sussex Academy of Arts, the Charter School outside of Georgetown.

The clubhouse is located at 18 Church Street, Milford.

Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Blue Hen Post 6483 and the Ladies Auxiliary announces the “Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition.” The VOD program is endorsed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ contest criteria and is designed to foster patriotism by allowing students the opportunity to voice their opinion in a 3 to 5 minute essay.

 This year’s theme is “Why America’s Veterans Should Be Honored.” The first-place winner, who competes with all the first-place VFW Department winners, receives $30,000 scholarship that is paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school.

Besides competing for the top scholarship prize, as well as other national scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $16,000, each Department’s first-place winner receives an all expense-paid trip to Washington D.C., sponsored by Target.

High school students in grades 9 to 12 in the Milford area can enter by sending a self addressed stamped envelope to obtain required entry form and complete rules.  Address envelope, Attention: VOD Scholarship Competition, Blue Hen VFW Post 6483, 77 Veterans Circle, Milford, DE 19963. 

Entry form and audio essay must be received by Nov. 1 at the VFW Blue Hen Post 6483.

Possum Point Players hold auditions for January dinner

Possum Point Players will hold open auditions for “Art” by Yasmina Reza on Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. and Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. This “serio-comedy” will be the 2009 season opening dinner theater production in January.

 The cast of “Art” calls for three men. Auditions will include cold readings from the script. All men are encouraged to come to these open auditions. Possum Point Players welcomes newcomers to the area and newcomers to theatre. This award-winning comedy promises to be a fun event for cast and audience alike.

 Steve Twilley will be directing the production. His auditions will be held at Possum Hall in Georgetown on Nov. 9 and 11. However, the rehearsals will begin early in December. With early casting, cast members will have time to work on learning lines in advance of the rehearsal dates.

 The performance dates for “Art” will be Jan. 23, 24, 30 and 31, with dinner starting at 6:30 p.m., and on Jan. 25 and Feb. 1, dinner at 12:30 p.m. Those hoping to be cast must be available for all performances, and for the week prior to opening night. Anyone wishing to try-out or help with the show who is unavailable for the two audition times should call the Possum Hall office at 856-3460.

The Sussex Chapter of Embroiders’ Guild

The Sussex Chapter of Embroiderers’ Guild meets on the second Monday of the month September through June at 10 a.m. at the Cheer Center in Georgetown. We welcome all levels of stitchers from beginners to advanced.

Ghost Hunting at Abbott’s Mill

Is Abbott’s Mill haunted? Stories abound of the nightlife in the Mill, which dates back to 1795, and we need your help to resolve this spirited debate. The Delaware Ghost Hunters, www.delawareghosthunters.com, have held paranormal investigations throughout the Delmarva region and are now coming down to Abbott’s Mill to scare up the evidence behind the legends. Participants will assist the Ghost Hunters during the investigation and learn the latest techniques used in paranormal investigation. This program is open to families. Cost is $20 for adults and $15 for children that are members of the Delaware Nature Society. Non-members are $25 per adult and $20 for children.
