Achievement: Since 1973, whenever someone has paid a bill at Milford Memorial Hospital, there’s a good chance it’s gone through Debbie Bordley at some point or another. After starting out as a clerk at Milford Memorial, she’s worked her way up to the point where she handles Bayhealth’s refunds, payments to patients and payments from insurance companies. This year, her co-workers voted her the second winner of the company’s Finance Recognition Award for “improving patient services, increasing efficiency, and boosting morale for her entire department.”
Q Was it a surprise when you found out you’d won this award?
A Yes. Everybody can nominate someone, and your peers vote on you; I really didn’t expect to hear that they’d chosen me out of everyone who was up for it. They do let you know that you’ve been nominated, but it was still a surprise to hear that I’d won.
Q How do you approach working with patients at the hospital?
A I’m just trying to put people first, and if they ask me something, I try to find the answer. I like my job and I like helping people, especially when they’re patients and they’ve got their health to deal with.
Q What has it been like staying with the hospital for 37 years?
A When I joined it was just Milford Memorial Hospital, and I worked in the business office at Milford. Then Bayhealth came in and they transferred all of us up to Kent. That was a change, but it’s all been good. I’ve met new people, and learned how to do things differently, for the better.
Q Do you think you’ll be around for another 37?
A I’ve got a few more years before I retire, but I’m not planning to go anyplace else. I’ve been here for the long haul, and I’ll stick around.
