About Shyres
Name: Keith Shyres
Achievement: After nine years as a policeman, Keith Shyres is already nearing the top of the ladder. On March 1 he was sworn in as deputy chief of the Harrington Police Department, finalizing his promotion from corporal to Chief Norman Barlow’s deputy.
Q How long have you been with the Harrington police?
A I’ve been on the job for nine years, and I’ve been here in Harrington for five.
Q Did you expect to rise through the ranks like this when you joined?
A Not this fast. Like I said, I’m going into my 10th year, and I’ve already hit a high mark in my career. It’s a lot of responsibility, but as a group, we’re all here to help each other out. I believe in hard work and everybody here working together to help each other shine, and that’s what’s helped me get to this position.
Q What areas have you worked in with the HPD?
A As a corporal I did the department’s “quality of life” position, focusing on traffic and drug investigations, and as of this point I’ll still be handling most of the drug investigations. We’ve done everything from executing search warrants to drug buys to keep the streets as safe as possible. I feel that I’ve seen most spots in this town — I’ve investigated serious crimes, drugs seizures, money seizures, traffic. Pretty much every part of the job, and now I’m up to the next level, and it’s a lot of fun.
Q Have you set any goals for yourself as deputy chief?
A Just to work closely with the men and women here, make sure everything runs smooth and help the chief with whatever we need to get done. Having a smooth-running department that keeps crime down is what every officer wants. We have a nice, tight-knit group of men and women here, and we make sure we accomplish our goals. I just want to do what I can to keep that going.
