1880 The Delaware portion of the Pennsylvania and Delaware Railway Company Railroad line running from Pomeroy, Pennsylvania to Delaware City became the Newark and Delaware City Railroad Company.
1884 Lammot du Pont, father of three later Presidents of the Du Pont Company (Pierre S., II, Irenee Sr., and Lammot, II) was killed in an explosion of a nitroglycerin vat.
1943 Due to wartime shortages, the rationing of meats, cheese, and fats was begun.
1963 Vice President Lyndon Johnson attended a ceremony at Fort Christina in Wilmington commemorating the 325th anniversary of the landing of the Swedes.
