Alvin L. Fitzgerald, 70, of Milford, DE died Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at home.
Mr. Fitzgerald was born in Milford, the son of the late John Townsend and Lillie Gertrude (Spicer) Fitzgerald. Mr. Fitzgerald served in the U.S. Army. Alvin was a jack of all trades and a master of all.
He worked as a weigh master with his brother, Jack, at Fitzgerald's Auto Salvage for many years. He also worked as a policeman with the Milford Police Department and as a detective with the Rehoboth Beach Police Department. He also was a truck driver, driving locally as well as over the road all over the United States. He ran the Five Points Inn in Lewes for his brother Gene, as well as working as a bar tender at the old Kent Sussex Inn in Milford. Alvin loved auto racing and was a fan of NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon. He and the Fitzgerald Family opened and operated the Little Lincoln Speedway for many years. He enjoyed playing in pool leagues and shuffleboard leagues, where he won many trophies for his skills.
Alvin grew up in and was a member of the Lincoln United Methodist Church, attended the Church of the Nazarene in Milford and was a member of the Milford Elks Lodge # 2401. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson Kyle Fitzgerald in 2006, a sister Ann M. Wiley in 1996 and a brother Gene W. Fitzgerald in 2006.
He is survived by his wife of 14 years Maryann Fitzgerald; six daughters Kathy Steininger and her husband Dale, of Hebron, Md., Carol A. Fitzgerald and her husband Ben of Milford, Donna S. Robertson of North Carolina, Tracy Jones and her husband Andy of Ellendale, Melissa Fitzgerald and Lillie E. Fitzgerald, both of Lincoln; one son Alvin Lee Fitzgerald of North Carolina; one brother Jack Fitzgerald and his wife Karen and a sister Barbara Hammond, all of Lincoln; 15 Grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Ave., Milford where friends may call from 1 - 3 p.m. Burial will be private in Milford Community Cemetery, Milford. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
