Milford police are looking for the man who signed a Milford High School student was of class and took him out of the building without the knowledge or permission of his parents on Dec. 3.
Milford Police Dept. Det. Dwight Young said the incident was a “mix-up” on the part of the school’s front office.
District policy allows a student to leave school early if a parent or legal guardian “signs out” the child at the front desk. Another adult can also pick up a student, but only after a parent or guardian leaves written permission with the school.
Young said the suspect was able to go through the sign-out process and leave school with the student in question despite not being his legal guardian and not having permission from the parents. Police have not commented on the relationship between the student and the person who signed him out, if one exists, and neither Milford School District Superintendent Sharon Kanter nor Milford High School Principal Tamara Cooper was available for comment before the Beacon’s press deadline.
Young said the student, an unidentified boy, was returned that day and the man who took him has not yet been apprehended, although warrants have been issued for his arrest.
Neither the name of the boy nor that of the offender has been released. Young did not comment on the specific charges involved.
