The Mispillion Art League will hold a grand opening for its Walnut Street gallery at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, officially opening the league’s new home and kicking off a big year for the artists’ society.
It’s been about two months since the art league moved from its Front Street home to a storefront on Walnut Street, expanding the gallery space and increasing its hours to bring in more foot traffic.
“We’re really delighted with how well it’s going,” MAL member Sara Gallagher said. “We get a lot of walk-in traffic, and that’s what we were hoping for. The community really seems very interested.”
The gallery will be home to a series of educational exhibits throughout the year, as well as hosting the league’s monthly “public art” sessions — free presentations from artists of all stripes from the Milford community on their work and techniques.
“We started it last year, but it’s really getting into swing now with the new season and the new gallery,” Gallagher said.
Sessions are held at 6:30 p.m. the third Monday of every month. January’s featured artists were wood carvers Doug Gibson and Mark Schanne, with a presentation on duck decoys. Next month’s guest is Angela Prattis, who will demonstrate textured block printing.
“We’ll have some activity for every month,” Gallagher said.
The art league also hosts an assortment of art classes for children and adults. The next one on the schedule is an all-day workshop on watercolor painting on Saturday, Jan. 23.
“We’ve really extended our classes,” Gallagher said. “We’re going to have them for toddlers, even.”
When it moved from Front Street to Walnut Street, the gallery also expanded its hours — it’s now open Wednesday through Saturday, opening at 10 a.m. each day. The building closes at 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, at 7 p.m. on Fridays and at 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
The gallery building also includes studio space for rent on the second floor. For more information on the gallery or the Mispillion Art League, call 430-7646. For more information on studio space, call 422-4533.
