Milford, Del. -

The First State Harmonettes are looking for a few good voices.

Specifically, the 17-member all-female barbershop harmony group is seeking females ages 12 and up to join them in singing Christmas carols at local venues during the months of November and December.

“We are always looking for more people,” said Margaret Martin of Lewes, who is the First State Harmonettes team leader and a six-year member. “The more people we have the better we sound.”

Harmonettes members hail from towns throughout southern Delaware. The group, which sings a cappella in a four-part harmony style, formed in November 2001 and it was officially registered as a Sweet Adelines International chorus in December 2004, Martin said.

Throughout the year, the Harmonettes sing at a variety of venues, including events and meetings held by local civic organizations, assisted living facilities, churches and hospitals.

This marks the first time the group has opened itself to visiting singers.

“We sing all over,” Martin said.

During the Visiting Nurses Program, Harmonettes members and their volunteer vocalists will sing on Dec. 6 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Santa House located on the Riverwalk at South Walnut Street in downtown Milford, and at Avenue Church located at 21 N. Church St. later in the month. In addition the vocalists will perform at hospitals in Dover and Milford during the holiday season.

“They are fantastic,” said Santa house organizer Bev French. “They love what they are doing, and they all have beautiful voices. It is lovely to watch and to hear.”

While an audition and membership fee are normally required in order to become a Harmonettes member, the Visiting Singers Program presents a chance for girls and women to try out the vocal joys and camaraderie of the Harmonettes, Martin said.

In addition, the Harmonettes usually memorize each song, but the visiting singers will be able to learn the songs using recordings and they will be permitted to follow along with written music during the holiday performances.

“You don’t have to read music to sing with us,” Martin said.

Vocalists interested in joining the Harmonettes for holiday caroling may call Martin at 645-8769 or simply show up during rehearsals held at 6:45 p.m. each Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Milford located at 101 S. Walnut St.

“We guarantee them a lot of fun,” Martin said. “We are group of women who really care about each other. If anyone has any problems, everyone is very supportive. It is a wonderful experience.”
