The film screen has been dark at the Schwartz Center for the Arts to accommodate holiday programming. That will change when the independent movie series returns with three movies based on real people, starting with “Bright Star” Wednesday, Jan. 13.
“Bright Star” features Australian actress Abbie Cornish as Fanny Brawne, the last woman to love and be loved by English poet John Keats, played by Ben Whishaw. In 1818, Keats moved next door to Brawne’s family in a London suburb to write. He catches her affection after she helps to care for his sick brother and a beautiful romance develops. The movie was directed by Jane Campion, who won Oscars for writing and directing “The Piano.”
“Bright Star’ will show at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, and Sunday, Jan. 17. It runs 2 hours and 8 minutes, and is rated PG for some sensuality, brief language and incidental smoking.
The movies continue with “The Boys are Back” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, and Sunday, Jan. 24. The movie runs one hour and 44 minutes, and is rated PG-13 for sexual language and thematic elements.
The producer of “Billy Elliot” and the Oscar-nominated director of “Shine” present another true tale of a man overcoming odds and navigating his way through a precarious situation. Clive Owen plays Joe Warr, a witty, wisecracking sports writer who in the wake of his wife’s death has to deal with being a single father to his two sons. “The Boys are Back” is based on the 2001 memoir by Simon Carr.
The month closes out with “Coco Before Chanel” starring Audrey Tatou as the young fashion pioneer at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, and Sunday, Jan. 31.
Tickets are $8, $6 for students, seniors 65 and older, and military. They can be purchased at the door one hour prior to showtime.
