  • People’s Place of Milford will be participating the The Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Challenge next month to raise awareness for domestic violence survivors experiencing financial abuse by their partners.
People’s Place’s Shelter, Advocacy, Freedom and Empowerment (SAFE) Program will be one of 200 domestic violence organizations nationwide participating in the challenge. The Allstate Foundation will award $500,000 among those participating organizations.
The challenge, which runs from Sept. 2 to Oct. 3, provides contests to raise additional funding, which could provide an extra award from the Allstate Foundation. The organization that raises the most money by Oct. 3 will win a $100,000 grand prize.
The purple purse is a symbol of a woman’s financial domain and the color represents domestic violence. The challenge will provide funding to the SAFE Program for services including emergency shelter, case management, advocacy, counseling, a 24-hour hotline and children’s services, which People’s Place provides for domestic violence victims for free.
