  • The District One team, USA East, score one run in the top of the eighth inning and then held on to defeat District Three 1-0 in the championship game of the Big League Softball World Series at the Lower Sussex County Little League Complex in Roxana.
The new world champs hail primarily from Milford Hig School, as well as Smyrna and Polytech high schools.
“I am very proud of what my girls accomplished this week, this is something we all will never forget,” said District One’s Head Coach Ron Fry.
The game was a sparkling, classic pitchers duel between District One’s Shaina Reed and District Three’s Regan Green, arguably two of the best hurlers in the state, and now, the world. Ironically, the game was played between two Delaware all-star from Kent and Sussex Counties.
After five scoreless innings by both teams, District One threatened in the top of the sixth as Whitney Dimora led off with a double off the right centerfield fence. Kasey Fry followed with a single, but Dimora was held at third. Green than showed why she was selected as Delaware’s All-State pitcher during the high school season by getting out of the jam, on an popup, a strikeout, and a ground out.
On to the top of the eighth, Dimora led off with a walk, and scored the only run of the game on a double off the top of the outfield fence by catcher Cassetty Howerin, who advanced to third on the throw to the plate.
“I am very excited right now, I don’t know what to say,” said an exuberant Howerin. “I am very happy that I was able to help my team today. . . .We are world champions!”
Reed had to pitch out of some trouble in the bottom of the eighth, but the celebration began after final out was recorded on a fly ball to left field.
“I was really nervous on the bus ride to the stadium, but I was able to settle in and focus pretty quickly today,
It’s incredible to think we beat a very good team twice to become World Champions,” said Reed.
