  • The Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) is asking Delawareans to make donations to the state’s Adopt-A-Student program as they shop for back-to-school items.
Staff members with the New Castle, Kent and Sussex county programs said there are plenty of backpacks and school supplies available, but that gift cards are still needed for families to finish back-to-school clothes shopping.
The Adopt-A-Student program asks for gift cards in amounts of $15, $25, $30, $50 or $100 to support families in need of school uniforms. The gift cards can be general Visa or American Express cards, or from specific stores like Target, Walmart, Old Navy, Forman Mills and Kmart.
Last year, more than 860 children throughout the state were served through the Adopt-A-Student programs, but the donations were still lacking for more than 100 children in Kent and Sussex counties.
Since the program’s founding in 1973, the Adopt-A-Family program has provided assistance to more than 4,500 families in an average year.
Gift cards can be dropped off or mailed to New Castle Adopt-A-Family, 3301 Green St., Claymont, DE 19703 or Kent/Sussex Adopt-A-Family, Milford State Service Center Annex, 13 S.W. Front St., Suite 103, Milford, DE 19963.
Tax-deductible cash donations can be made to Human Services Council, Inc., 3301 Green St., Claymont, DE 19703 or 13 S.W. Front St., Milford, DE 19963. United Way donations can be designated by writing in the following codes: New Castle #9102 or Kent/Sussex #12774.
For more information, call the New Castle Adopt-A-Family at (302) 792-9538 or the Kent/Sussex County Adopt-A-Family at (302) 424-7260.
