Milford’s American Legion Post 3 baseball team had a tough day at the plate Sunday against Stahl Post 30’s pitcher Tyler Newton. Post 3 was blanked by the score of 10-0 in a Father’s Day game shortened to five innings by the ten-run mercy rule. The game was played at Wilson Field in New Castle.

Newton, who pitched for Wilmington University this spring, recorded six strikeouts. Stahl’s first baseman

Lonnie Funderbuck led the offense with four 4 RBI and teammate David Summerfield knocked in an additional two runs. Tyler Williams chipped in with an RBI triple.

“We’re off to a slow start at 1-3,” said Milford coach Wayne Hurd. “We are still trying to get a core group of players together, and construct our lineup. Hurd said the biggest concern initially was Graduation, but now it’s the boys’ summer work schedules, vacations, and athletes playing for other teams.

Hurd added that he has a young group of players who are already showing signs of improvement. “The players are embracing the challenge and doing their best to try to improve, so they will definitely be a good ball club in the future,” he said. Most of the players on the roster attend Milford High School, but their territory also covers Lake Forest High School District.
Milford plays Fox Post #2 Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at Wesley College, followed by a game against R.C.Dupont Post 18 on Wednesday at Milford at 6 p.m. The team will also play at Seaford High School against Post 6 on Thursday at 6 p.m.
