Milford scored eight goals in the first period on the way to a 13-1 victory over Sussex Central Friday afternoon in boys lacrosse
Milford’s offense was in high gear Friday afternoon as the Buccaneers boys’ lacrosse team defeated host Sussex Central 13-1.
This one was decided early, as the Buccaneers out-ran and outhustled the Golden Knights throughout the contest. Milford banged home eight goals in the first period to take a commanding lead.
“We got a big lead early,” said Milford coach Joe Vavala, “so I decided to substitute early, to give everyone a chance to get into the game. However, things got a little ragged, so I had to put some of the starters in to restore some order on the field.”
Milford’s second team moved the ball fairly well, but only managed one goal in the second period. Central got its’ only goal of the game by Dylan Blake in the second quarter to leave the score at 9-1, with half a game still to play.
The game slowed down a little in the third period as neither team was able to score. Milford than added four more insurance goals in the fourth period to prevent any possible counterattack by the Knights in the closing minutes.
Mathew Viramontes led the Bucs with three goals, while Zach Heesh, Ring Lardner and Evan Becker each had two goals, and Clay Stevenson recorded 18 saves. Knights’ goalkeeper John Potter had ten saves.
“We have a very young team,” said Central coach Joe Macaluso. “We have a good group of seniors, who work hard, but we have a very inexperienced team. A lot of our players are still learning how to play lacrosse.”
Milford is now 4-1 on the season, having won two games in a row. Their next match is Wednesday at home against Delmar at 7 p.m.
Sussex Central drops to 0-4 on the season. Their next games are Monday at home against Dickinson at 4 p.m. and on Wednesday at home against Cape Henlopen at 4 p.m.
