On Friday night, two of the Henlopen South’s top squads in girls basketball went toe-to-toe with the division championship at stake. Only, the contest was between two teams that not everyone would have penciled in as the favorites coming into the season.
Both the Milford Bucs and Lake Forest Spartans have had tremendous bounce-back seasons. The Lady Spartans entered the year coming off an 8-12 season in 2012-13, while Milford tallied a 9-11 mark.
Lake Forest (14-4) and Milford (16-2) kicked off the season against one another, a 43-37 win by Milford, and it was only fitting that the second meeting between the rivals would come late in the year with the division on the line.
The Lady Spartans broke out to an early lead Friday night, to some clutch offensive rebounding and quick ball-movement. Roshell Dalton and Gabi Cubbage helped lead Lake Forest’s offensive attack, Dalton finishing with 16 points while Cubbage contributed 13 Friday night.
In the first half, Lake kept a steady lead while the Lady Bucs did their best to keep pace, doing so without point guard Myleiris Vazquez for a time, who left early with injury before returning before the half ended. The Lady Spartans led by five at the break.
Unable to pull away from the Bucs in the first half, the Lady Spartans offense did their best to do so in the second half, eventually gaining a double-digit lead. However, Milford would make a run in part to the returning Vazquez who scored 13 points to lead the Lady Bucs.
Vazquez would go on to score the most important basket of the game, nailing a running floater with just 26 seconds left to give Milford their first – and only lead they’d need, winning 47-46.
Milford clinching the Henlopen South also clinches a spot in the state tournament, and while Lake Forest failed to take the division Friday night, at 14-5 they’ll likely be joining the Lady Bucs.
