Bruce Springsteen
The writers of this blog are not music critics, and they don't consider a second (or third, fourth or fifth) mortgage to be a perfectly reasonable course of action to pay for front-row tickets, but despite being a whole lot more middle aged than they were when they first put \x34Born in the U.S.A.\x34 or \x34The River\x34 down on the turntable, still feels like Bruce has something -- OK, a lot of things -- to say about our country and the way we live our lives, things that not a lot of other artists are saying. And whether he's talking about the knife that can cut this pain from your heart, the house that's waiting for you to walk in or what that flag flying over the courthouse means, he's nailing down feelings that are so universal that they can raise your spirits and break your heart at the same time. Plus, let¹s face it, the man rocks.

As Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band plow through their barn-busting Australian tour and American fans (in some odd cities) prepare for U.S. on-sales tomorrow and Saturday, we thought we should round up some extant Bruce news before the next deluge of Springsteen-y goodness.

First things first: If you missed the stream of Springsteen’s new solo arrangement of “For You” from the Feb. 5 Perth show, stop everything and listen right now. I’m tempted to say that the way he makes this 40-year old song sound so vital and moving is a testament to Springsteen’s constant reevaluation of his approach to his craft, and to the continued relevance of his older material and of him as an artist. But instead I’ll just say “Holy Crap!” and leave it at that.

Next, it’s not too late to take our quiz scientifically proven to determine which E Street Band member you are, or should be, or something. But in the meantime, with 2,056 respondents so far, here’s where people turned up on the E Street scale:

Hmm … Methinks people may have tailored their answers to be more Bruce-like. Or maybe there are just a whole lot of Bosses out there.

Congrats to our Bruuuuuuce winners, Raquel and Ryan!

Congrats to our Bruuuuuuce winners, Raquel and Ryan!

And here is a belated congratulations to winners of our “Show us Your Springsteen Stuff” contest, Raquel of Lisboa, Portugal and and Ryan of Leominster, Mass. — the entries proved too tough to judge, so we wound up picking their names out of a virtual hat. They each received a free shirt from E Street Clothing Co. — check out their full selection of Bruuuuuuuce gear here. And do yourself a favor and check out the gallery of Bruce collections if you haven’t already — some of these people are cray, as my daughter and Tom Morello like to say.

Finally, without further ado, a picture of Bruce, Stevie and Nils with a penguin, because penguin. (Rest of the must-see shots here.)

It was bye-bye new Jersey, we were … not airborne, because this is a flightless waterfowl.

Oh, and the links:

And that’s all we got. Feel free to applaud.
