  • A 26-year-old Harrington man was killed Saturday morning in a crash involving a tractor trailer on Delaware Route 24 in Millsboro.
According to the Delaware State Police, the accident occurred around 8 a.m. as Mark L. Smith was operating a 1988 Mercedes Benz 300 westbound on Delaware Route 24 just west of Maryland Camp Road when he lost control of the vehicle on the icy roadway. Police said the Mercedes rotated counter clockwise, crossing the center dividing line into the path of an eastbound 2006 International Tractor Trailer hauling Pepsi Cola products operated by 55-year-old Kim B. Smith of Salisbury, Md. Police said the tractor trailer struck the passenger side of the Mercedes, causing both vehicles to travel off the south side of the roadway and into a field where the Mercedes and the a portion of the tractor trailer became engulfed in flames. Police said Mark Smith was unresponsive and trapped in the vehicle. Police said Kim Smith was able to exit the tractor trailer and made several unsuccessful attempts to rescue Mark Smith by utilizing an onboard fire extinguisher to put out the flames.
Police said Mark Smith remained trapped in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Kim Smith was properly restrained and not injured.
