  • The Caesar Rodney Riders wrestling squad fended off Henlopen foe Cape Henlopen and a number of impressive out of state schools to win the Battle at the Beach over the weekend at Indian River High School.

Just three days removed from a dual-meet loss to Cape Henlopen, the Riders exacted a little revenge topping the Vikings by 51 points to take the overall crown.  CR had top finishers in all but five of the 14 weight classes on Saturday, including overall wins by Micah Hight (120lbs), Tony Scarfo (145lbs), and Zack Parker (285lbs).

Cape Henlopen followed closely thanks to first place finisher Justin Lopez (170lbs), and Thomas Ott (220lbs), Aaron Mattioni (195lbs), Austin Smith (160lbs) who finished third or higher in their respective weight classes Saturday.

Malvern Prep, just one of many out-of-state schools to participate over the weekend, sported the tournament’s outstanding wrestlers, Jake Anderson. Anderson was named outstanding wrestler of the tournament after winning all five of his bouts by pin-fall in 1:30 or less.

Milford, one of just four Delaware schools to finish in the top ten Saturday, were led by Alex Creasey who defeated Caesar Rodney’s Mason Harrington by pin-fall at 106lbs.
Jarek Lugo and Bart Dalious claimed second place in their respective weight classes over the weekend for Milford. Lugo fell to defending state-champion Micah Hight at 120lbs, while Dalious was defeated by Nick Shields of Dallastown at 132lbs.
John Badger won a fifth place bout at 145lbs against Christian Knight of Forest Park High School by decision, 9-3, rounding out the Bucs’ top finishers.
Milford returns to tournament action this weekend participating in the Delcastle Invitational in Wilmington, Del. this weekend. This tournament will feature 20 Delaware schools including Cape Henlopen, Polytech, Salesianum, St. Mark’s, Sussex Central, Sussex Tech, and Woodbridge.
The Bucs finished seventh overall in last year’s tournament where former Buc Alvontae Drummond captured the award for Outstanding Wrestler.  This year’s tournament begins on Friday with a 4:00 p.m. start time and resumes on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
After this weekend, the Bucs return to their dual-meet schedule next Wednesday traveling to take on Seaford.
