  • In an effort to bolster recreational activities on the Mispillion River, Milford’s Parks and Recreation Department recently installed a new kayak and canoe staging area at the Cheney Willmont Greenway on Marshall Street.
Previously, the 30-foot dock and gangway for boats was not kayak and canoe friendly, said Director of Parks and Recreation Gary Emory. The new cradle will now allow easy access to the river from the Sussex county side, he said, with a bar allowing for kayakers or canoers to stabilize themselves before paddling away.
“This is something we wanted to do, that needed to be done to get more people out on that beautiful natural resource,” he said. “It’s a nice little addition that adds to the Mispillion River and adds to ecotourism.”
This is the second public dock that is available on the Mispillion River, with the other dock located behind the Milford Police Department.
Recreation Superintendent Mary Betts said the use of the Mispillion River for recreational purposes has greatly increased in the last five years, and expects that local events like the Paddle Pedal Festival have bolstered local interest in river-related activities.
“We’ve found that we do have quite a few local users and wanted to make sure they had additional access to the river besides the one by the police station,” Betts said. “It’s still in a very pristine natural state. There’s a lot of wildlife that can be found, not just fish, eels, and turles, but blue herons, egrets and bald eagles that live along the river.”
Funding for the kayak/canoe cradle came from the Parks and Recreation operation maintenance budget.
