The Milford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is hosting its second Country Barbecue and Auction on Saturday, Oct. 26 to offer local residents an opportunity not only to score a variety of items through Chinese and silent auctions, but also an opportunity to contribute to a new hospital for Milford.
A small group of volunteers with the Milford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary are working together to raise funds for the hospital’s campaign, taking on the feat of building a new hospital one step at a time.
The auxiliary is hosting its second Country Barbecue and Auction on Saturday, Oct. 26 to offer local residents an opportunity not only to score a variety of items through Chinese and silent auctions, but also an opportunity to contribute to a new hospital for Milford.
“All of us work very hard to raise money for this capital campaign fund for the hospital,” said Cynthia Jones, membership chairwoman of the auxiliary. “We just want a new and improved hospital for the doctors and the community, and the nurses and employees.”
Auction items will include local artwork, a weekend at a Slaughter Beach cottage, dinner for six, as well as items from local businesses including Grotto Pizza, Duck In Carwash, Hertrich and i.g. Burtons.
The event will also include live entertainment by “The Movies” and dinner catered by Troops Barbecue and Catering.
This year’s ticket sales goal is 200, Jones said, which has almost been reached. Tickets at the door will be limited, she said.
Since the auxiliary’s inception in the early 1900s, the volunteer-based organization has raised millions in funds for Milford Memorial Hospital, and most recently has contributed $300,000 toward an ultimate goal of $750,000 over a five-year period specifically for the hospital’s capital campaign. Commitments totaling $1.7 million have been made to the Milford replacement facility.
Kim Wilkins, a spokeswoman for Bayhealth, said the fundraising efforts of groups like the auxiliary help the hospital meet its constant needs.
“Our auxiliary is such a wonderful organization and they have raised literally millions for our hospital,” Wilkins said.
Last year’s auction raised $4,000 toward the capital campaign to replace and update facilities, equipment and services.
“A new hospital is needed to keep up with the needs of our community, which is growing,” Wilkins said. “The hospital is getting very outdated.”
The total cost to build the new hospital is estimated at $200 million. According to Taylor Porter, a spokeswoman for Bayhealth, Phase III of the health care system’s capital campaign will focus heavily on raising funds for Milford Memorial.
“They’re going to build a new hospital in Milford and we’re just doing this as a process for helping with that,” Jones said. “Our community is growing and all of this money that we raise goes back to Milford. This is just Milford doing this.”
