  • More than 100 truck drivers from the Delaware region will converge at the Delaware State Fairgrounds in Harrington on Oct. 5 to take part in the 11th annual “World’s Largest Truck Convoy” event for Special Olympics Delaware.
The convoy is part of a national effort to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics Delaware. More than 145 trucks gathered at last year’s event, raising more than $41,000. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $290,000 for Special Olympics Delaware. Truck driver participants are asked to raise a minimum of $100.
“As we celebrate our 11th year, we continue to be amazed by the outpouring of support from the trucking community,” said Lisa Smith, director of special events for Special Olympics Delaware. “The amount of money raised is spectacular, but what’s just as important is the opportunity for the truckers to meet our athletes, and in turn, for our families to show their appreciation back to them. The drivers will tell you that meeting the athletes and families is their biggest thrill.”
The event is organized by Delaware law enforcement and sponsored by Walmart and FedEx. Additional supporters include the DelDOT, Perdue, WBOC 16 and Fox 21.
Registration for the event begins at 7 a.m. and the convoy will depart from the Delaware State Fairgrounds at 10 a.m. followed by a parade in downtown Harrington along Clark and Commerce streets. The event will also include a festival and lunch at the fairgrounds at 11:30 a.m.
