  • This fall the Milford VFW Blue Hen Post 6483 is providing two scholarship opportunities for local youth, including the Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition and the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest.
    The Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition is open to Milford-area students in grades nine through 12, including home-schoolers, and offers an opportunity to win thousands of dollars in scholarships, an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C. and dozens of other awards.
    Students interested in the competition are required to write and record a three- to five-minute audio essay in response to the theme “Why I’m optimistic about our nation’s future.” The deadline for entries is Nov. 1, and students will begin by competing on a local level and those winners will advance to a state-wide competition. State winners receive at least a $1,000 scholarship, and first place receives a $30,000 scholarship.
    The second scholarship opportunity, the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest, is open to Milford-area students in grades six through eight, including home-schoolers, an also offers an opportunity for students to win thousands of dollars in scholarships.
    Students interested in the competition are required to write a 300- to 400-word essay in response to the theme “What patriotism means to me.” The deadline for entries is Nov. 1, and students will begin by competing on a local level and those winners will advance to a state-wide competition.
