A Milford man who allegedly burglarized a Hertrich Nissan dealership in Dover has been caught in Pennsylvania.
The Milford man suspected in burglarizing a local car dealership and then injuring a state trooper while escaping has been caught in Pennsylvania.
The man, identified as Darrell R. Putnam, was caught by police in Downintown, Pa., and is being held in the Chester Count Detention Center, said Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.
Putnam is being held on a fugitive warrant pending extradition back to Delaware, and will be formally charged upon his return.
A Delaware State Police trooper suffered a fractured left foot when a burglary suspect hit her patrol car while escaping from the scene of the break-in.
The suspect has been identified through vehicle registration data as Darrell R. Putnam, 26, of Milford, said police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.
The case began at approximately 4:56 a.m. Aug. 11 at the Hertrich Nissan dealership at 1378 S. Dupont Highway, Fournier said. When the trooper drove onto the property, she spotted a dark green Honda Accord leaving via the north exit. As she left her patrol car to contact the operator, Putnam hit the driver's side door, pinning her left foot between the door and frame. Putnam then struck two other cars before fleeing, Fournier said.
A check of the business showed Putnman had allegedly taken a small safe after getting inside through a window. The safe, which apparently had been placed on the Honda's passenger seat, fell out of the car and was found on the ground.
The trooper was treated for her injuries at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital; her condition was not released.
Fournier said when caught, Putnam is expected to be charged with first-degree assault of a police officer, second-degree burglary, attempted theft $1,500 or greater, criminal mischief $5,000 or greater, resisting arrest with force and criminal mischief $1,000 but less than $5,000.
