  • Groundbreaking on a new home for the deLeon family, made possible by Sussex County Habitat for Humanity (SCHFH) and a partnership with two local businesses, is scheduled for 5 p.m. Aug. 20 at Gilcrest Street in Milford.
Burris Logistics and Brendon T. Warfel Construction joined in a partnership and to work on the new home for Abigail deLeon, a plumber, stay-at-home-mom Ofilia Velasquez and their four children, ages one to five.
“We are thrilled to be working together with two incredible Milford businesses,” said Tom Protack, director of community engagement for SCHFH. “We really want to rally the Milford community around the deLeon family as they begin the process of owning their own home.”
Habitat officials hope the family will be able to move into their new house by the end of the year, just in time for the holidays.
The two companies and SCHFH hope to include as many volunteers and organizations, such as churches, from the Milford area to reduce the cost of the project.
If time or materials cannot be donated, SCHFH will use funds raised for this build to pay for the work that cannot be completed by volunteers.
The deLeon family was approved by the Habitat Board in Nov. 2012, and a barbecue and concert were held by Christ Episcopal Church on Aug. 4, 2013 in support of  the SCHFH project.
DeLeon and Velasquez will be required to work a minimum of 250 hours each to help with the build. They will also begin participating in programs that teach them how to maintain a family budget while eliminating debt.
After the groundbreaking ceremony, Grotto’s in Milford will host a community pizza night, donating 20 percent of the proceeds back to the project. Grotto’s is also a sponsor of the project, agreeing to provide pizzas for the volunteer build days.
