  • The Delaware Office of Highway Safety announced the results Friday of the third and final wave of the high visibility distracted driving enforcement campaign, Phone in One Hand. Ticket in the Other that ran June 4-17.
Thirty-five police agencies out of the participating 40 agencies, along with Delaware State Police, have reported more than 1,500 citations issued during the third wave of enforcement. This will bring the total number of Delaware cell phone citations issued as part of this campaign to more than 5,000.
Delaware law enforcement has issued more than 33,000 cell phone citations since the cell phone law went into effect in Delaware on Jan. 2, 2011. In 2010, cell phone distraction was a contributing factor in 199 crashes; 139 crashes in 2011, and 125 crashes in 2012.
The first wave of enforcement was held Nov. 7-20, 2012 and resulted in more than 2,000 cell phone citations issued. The second wave occurred April 9-22 and resulted in more than 2,000 drivers being issued cell phone citations. Last year, Delaware law enforcement officers issued more than 13,000 cell phone citations statewide.
