Trabein Banks and Kelly Smith are chasing one of their dreams in downtown Milford. For a long time they’ve wanted to open up a sports bar and pool hall. Their new business, Longshots, does just that.
“There was a pool hall here previously and I think there’s a need in Milford for a pool hall,” said Smith “We wanted to make it the nicest we could with a lot of tables.”
Banks, who is from Milford, expanded, saying the timing seemed right.
“I felt like it was the right place and the right time to start this,” he said. “The town needs a sports bar. We are bringing things to town that no one else has brought us here.”
Smith said she and Banks chose the name Longshots because it sums up what they’re about.
“I think that it encompasses a lot of different sports,” Smith said. “It could be a homerun in baseball. It could be a shot from one end of the table to the other in pool. It also incorporates liquor. It’s also a gambling term, like 99-to-1 odds. It just encompassed everything.”
Longshots is located in the Riverwalk Shopping Center, in the space that used to be Mrs. Q’s. They’ve filled the space with four pool tables, a computerized trivia game, dart boards, a bar and 10 flat screen TVs, where patrons can catch major sporting events.
“We both love sports a lot,” said Banks. “There was no true sports bar that played sports in Milford. We wanted place with that type of sports feel, a place where you can catch any game, anytime.”
Longshots opened at the end of last month. A ribbon cutting will be held on Friday and the grand opening ceremony will be held on Saturday. Even though the business is just getting started, the owners already have big plans for its future.
“We do want to set up live trivia,” said Smith. “We plan to have people host their NFL draft parties and fantasy football league parties here. We’re hoping to get teams to have pool leagues here.”
They’re also hoping to feature live bands on Fridays and DJs on Saturdays, Banks said.
When it comes to food, Longshots has their customers covered. Patrons can sit at the bar, order off the menu of La Ortolana Pizza & Ristorante, an Italian restaurant which is just a few doors down, and their food will be delivered to them at the bar.
Longshots also has a fully stocked bar to quench its customer’s thirst. Even though Longshots is a sports bar the owners don’t want locals thinking they’re a one-trick pony.
“I think we are sports-oriented but we want people to understand that we have a little something for everybody,” Smith said.
