Delaware State Police troopers have arrested two brothers in connection with a May 23 home invasion.
The incident took place at approximately 3:30 a.m. May 23, at a home in the 9000 block of Bay Road, Magnolia, said police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.
The 22-year-old resident said he was asleep when he heard loud noises and went to investigate. He was confronted by two black men who asked where someone was, the man said. One of the men punched the victim in the face and knocked him down when he was not able to answer the question after which both men beat the victim with a stick.
They then fled the area in an unknown direction.
The victim was able to call 911 and was later taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Detectives determined this was not a random act, and that the victim was targeted in the home invasion.
Using this information, officers obtained warrant on the brothers, Christopher Purnell, 23, and Kiernan Purnell, 18, both of Milford. Christopher Purnell was arrested by Milford Police following a May 31 traffic stop; Kiernan Purnell turned himself in to state police on June 2.
Both were charged with first-degree assault, home invasion, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, criminal mischief over $5,000 and second-degree conspiracy.
Christopher Purnell was jailed at the Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown, in default of a $50,000 secured bond.
Kiernan Purnell was jailed at SCI after failing to pay a $61,500 secured bond.
