  • Milford's Vintage Base Ball club known as the Excelsiors remains undefeated through the first ten games of the season. Club Manager Jeff Puglia said the league is getting more competitive all the time. "Last year some of our players were on the Lewes (Del.) team roster, but we wanted to have our own team in Milford. Most of the team has played softball in the past, so that helped us when we switched to the vintage baseball," he said.
The Excelsiors are currently 10-0 after sweeping five doubleheaders this season.
Puglia said the weekend games are played back-to-back, but usually against two different teams, rather than playing the same team twice.
On Sunday, Milford defeated Rising Sun, MD 13-1 and 21-10, while on Saturday the team defeated Diamond State (Wilmington) 12-6. In the nightcap, Milford crunched Hoboken, NJ by the score of 33-7.
The team got rolling at the end of May, when they beat Rising Sun at home at Brown's Branch Park in a thrilling doubleheader.
The team is led by Jim "Preacher" Oechsler, Aaron "Hambone Sterling, Jeff "Babe" Puglia and Matt "PegLeg" Revelle. The team has two strong hurlers in Randy "Chief" Kenton and Randall "Coop" Zehr.
Currently, Milford is the number one team in the Mid-Atlantic District area. This weekend, they will travel south to play the number two team Lewes, who comes into the match with an 8-1 record. "This should be a great test for our team, with number one playing number two," he said.
Puglia also stated that the annual Vintage Base Ball tournament, which had been held in Philadelphia, will now be played in Milford on the weekend of September 21 and 22.
