  • The City of Milford approved several budget adjustments and awarded a contract for electrical work at its Monday council meeting. The council designated funds for 55 new electrical transmission poles, as well as for municipal parking repairs and paving. Here’s a look at how your tax dollars are being spent.

  • The City of Milford approved several budget adjustments and awarded a contract for electrical work at its Monday council meeting. The council designated funds for 55 new electrical transmission poles, as well as for municipal parking repairs and paving. Here’s a look at how your tax dollars are being spent.
     
    Transmission Poles
    The city will be installing 55 new steel transmission poles along U.S. Route 113 as part of a larger electric utility project that’s underway. The city is running power lines along U.S. Route 113 to transmit purchased power to a new substation, which is located near the new solar farm.  
    “If we lose a major part of our old substation this new substation will help carry customers until the problem can be fixed, this also creates a total loop around the city from substation to substation,” said City Manager Richard Carmean.
    Bids were accepted from nine different companies. The City Council awarded the bid to Alabama-based M.D. Henry Company, who offered the lowest bid, coming in at $753,954.
    According to Carmean, it will take 14 weeks for the poles to be delivered. Construction will begin mid-summer and the project, including the hanging of the power lines, should be completed by late fall.
     
    Parking lot paving
    The City Council approved a budget adjustment in order to pave the municipal parking lot at Park Avenue and Front Street. George and Lynch Inc. of Dover gave the city a quote of $25,800 for labor, equipment and supplies. The company will repave the lot, repair any damaged catch basis and paint parking spaces, stop lines and fire lanes.
     
    Parking lot repairs
    The Council also approved two budget adjustments to have two municipal parking lots patched as needed. One lot is located at Northeast Front Street and North Washington Street. It is being repaired because there is an area of the lot that has sunken. The area will be dug up so that the problem can be resolved, then the hole will be filled and paved over. The other lot is located Southwest Front Street, behind the Georgia House.
    “The parking lot behind the Georgia House is just kind of crumbled up, when rain comes it turns into a mud puddle,” Carmean said.
    The lot will be given an overlay of asphalt to smooth out the issues. Jerry’s Paving, of Milford, gave the city a quote of $9,185 to complete the repairs, but those repairs represent only a temporary fix for that lot.
    Brad Dennehy, director of public works for the city, informed Carmean in a memo that both lots will need to be completely repaved in the future.
    These repairs are being paid for in part by $10,000 that was left in a parking authority account when the Milford Parking Authority was dissolved. Any additional funds needed would come out of the general fund, according the Councilman Skip Pikus.
