  • Milford's softball team scored early and often in a 20-0 road victory over host St. Elizabeth's Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Buccaneers extended their 2013 winning streak to three straight games out of the gate.
"We knew we had an experienced team, with a lot of returning players from last season, but this is a great win for us," said Milford Coach Tina Beach. "We were able to use everyone on the team today, and we were able to move some players around to let them play at different positions. This could be valuable later in the season," she said. Counting back to last season, including the playoffs, Milford is now on a nice streak, winning six of their last seven games.
Senior Lindsay Siok pitched five innings of one-hit, shutout softball for the Buccaneers. Siok is one of only three seniors on this year's varsity roster, so while the team is enjoying much success right now, watch out for Milford over the next couple of years.
The Lady Vikings have had mixed reviews in their first two games, losing to St. Mark's 11-3, but then beat Dickinson 19-2 last week.
While the pitching has been generally strong this year, the offense is clicking at an amazing pace, scoring 42 runs in the first three games, an average of 14 runs per game.
So far, everyone in the lineup is contributing to the team's success. Haylee Scruggs went 3-4 against Cape Henlopen, while Kylie Nelson went 2-2, and Kasey Fry went 2-3 with 2 walks. Against Padua, in the season opener, Milford slugged three home runs and a pair of hits from Siok, Nelson and Fry. The crew also has plenty of power, with a handful of doubles and triples.
"Today's game will also help us during the season as we get ready for conference games next week after spring break, " said Beach.
The Lady Bucs will host Easton HS (MD) on Saturday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. St. Elizabeth's next game is scheduled for Monday at home in Canby Park against Padua at 3:45 p.m.
