The Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club provides before- and after-school programs, childcare services and countless recreation opportunities to nearly 150 children each day.
Now the local non-profit is hoping to receive some support back from the community it has served since 1992.
The club recently launched its annual Fund For Kids campaign with a goal of collecting $60,000 in corporate and private donations before June 1.
“This is our primary fundraiser of the year, and every dollar we raise stays right here in Milford where it gets used mostly to help provide scholarship to young people whose families otherwise might not be able to come here,” explained Linda Chick, the chairperson of this year’s campaign.
While it costs $115 a week for both before- and after-school care at the Boys & Girls Club’s 34,000-square-foot facility off of Airport Road, the Delaware Division of Social Services’ income-eligible Purchase of Care childcare assistance program subsidizes most of the cost for children younger than 12 who come from low-income families.
The remainder of the membership fee for those children is borne by the families, although the club often covers that portion of the cost through scholarships.
“The Purchase of Care system also stops covering a portion of the cost when children turn 12, which is the usually when they are most at risk,” club resource director Margaux Azzanesi said. “That’s why we try to transition those kids into becoming junior staff members so they can keep coming to the club and start helping the younger ones.”
Last year, the Milford club paid out about $47,000 worth scholarships to disadvantaged children, Chick said.
“Every dollar we raise through the Fund for Kids campaign gets matched by the Boys and Girls Club of Delaware, so in reality we’re hoping to raise a total of $120,000, which represents about one-tenth of our annual operating budget,” she said. “That’s why, whether you contribute $25 or $10,000, it is all very much needed and very much appreciated.”
In addition to collecting donations through the annual Fund For Kids campaign, the Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club will be offering a series of community activities in the coming months that also will help raise money for the organization.
On March 15, the club will host its annual Bowl-a-Thon from 6 to 11 p.m. at Milford Bowling Lanes. In exchange for collecting a minimum of $35 in donation pledges, participants will be able to bowl an unlimited number of games during the five-hour event, which also will feature raffles, auctions, prizes and plenty of entertainment.
For the first-time ever, the club also will be holding its long-running annual Kids Fest event in Milford on June 8.
Page 2 of 2 - The event, which previously has been held at the Delaware State Fairgrounds in Harrington, will feature a bonanza of rides, activities and programs for the whole family, including pony and cart rides, an array of inflatable bounces, slides and mazes, an obstacle course, a talent show, carnival rides, clowns, jugglers and magicians.
Half of the proceeds from both events will be matched by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware.
